Providing economic security for your family if you die, become disabled, or experience an injury or illness is a major consideration in personal financial planning. You’re provided with employee Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment insurance coverage at no cost to you.
Eligible employees automatically receive Unum Life and AD&D coverage in the amount of $10,000. Don’t forget to update your beneficiary designation on BenefitElect if you experience an eligible life event. You may update your beneficiary anytime throughout the year and do not need to have a Qualifying Life Event to do so.
Voluntary Life and AD&D are available to buy additional coverage for yourself, and/or for your spouse and children. Employees can choose amounts in $10,000 increments up to 5x your annual earnings or $500,000. The guaranteed issue amount for employees is $200,000 (if you apply when initially eligible for coverage). For any amount over the guaranteed issue limit, Evidence of Insurability (EOI) is required. You must be enrolled in order to enroll your spouse, domestic partner, or children.
Voluntary Short-Term Disability, through Unum, protects you and your family from a loss of income if you are unable to work due to an illness, injury, or accident for a short period of time. The Voluntary STD plan provides 60% of your weekly salary, to a maximum of $1,000 per week for up to 13 weeks of disability (after a 14-day waiting period).
STD benefits may be offset by state-mandated disability plans in California, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Washington State, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
Note: Pregnancy is considered a short-term disability but includes special limits on the benefit duration. Please refer to the Unum Benefit Summary for more details.
Voluntary Long-Term Disability, through Unum, is important because anyone at any age may become injured or ill for an extended period of time. LTD protects you from a loss of income in the event you are unable to work due to an illness, injury, or accident for a period of time that exceeds the short-term disability benefit.
Voluntary LTD coverage will replace 60% of your base salary to a monthly maximum of $5,000 if you are disabled for more than 90 days and are unable to work. LTD benefits start on the 91st day of being unable to work and are offset by other sources of income, such as Social Security and workers’ compensation.
